چکیده

In this article we review and discuss a mechanism for coupling between electric polarization and magnetization that can ultimately lead to electric-field switchable magnetization. The basic idea is that a ferroelectric distortion in an antiferromagnetic material can “switch on” the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction which leads to a canting of the antiferromagnetic sublattice magnetizations, and thus to a net magnetization. This magnetization ~ M is coupled to the polarization ~ P via a trilinear free energy contribution of the form ~ P · ( ~ M × ~ L), where ~ L is the antiferromagnetic order parameter. In particular, we discuss why such an invariant is present in R3c FeTiO3 but not in the isostructural multiferroic BiFeO3. Finally, we construct symmetry groups that in general allow for this kind of ferroelectricallyinduced weak ferromagnetism.

Toroidal moments as indicator for magneto-electric coupling: the case of BiFeO3 versus FeTiO3

In this paper we present an analysis of the magnetic toroidal moment and its relation to the various structural modes in R3c-distorted perovskites with magnetic cations on either the perovskite A or B site. We evaluate the toroidal moment in the limit of localized magnetic moments and show that the full magnetic symmetry can be taken into account by considering small induced magnetic moments on...

Electric-field-switchable magnets: The case of BaNiF4

We show, using the antiferromagnetic ferroelectric BaNiF4 as a model system, that the “weak” magnetic order arising from a polar structural distortion in a ferroelectric magnet due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can be switched by an electric field. We calculate the magnitude of the resulting magnetic order parameter in BaNiF4 using first-principles techniques, and we show that it is ...

magnetic dispersion and anisotropy in multiferroic BiFeO3.

We have determined the full magnetic dispersion relations of multiferroic BiFeO3. In particular, two excitation gaps originating from magnetic anisotropies have been clearly observed. The direct observation of the gaps enables us to accurately determine the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction and the single ion anisotropy. The DM interaction supports a sizable magnetoelectric coupling in thi...

Effects of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on low-energy magnetic excitations in copper benzoate.

We have investigated the physical effects of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in copper benzoate. In the low-field limit, the spin gap is found to vary as H(2/3)ln((1/6)(J/mu(B)H(s)) (H(s): an effective staggered field induced by the external field H) in agreement with the prediction of conformal field theory, while the staggered magnetization varies as H(1/3) and the ln((1/3)(J/mu(B)...

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction accounting for the orientation of magnetic domains in ultrathin films: Fe/W(110)

Combining relativistic first-principles calculations with a micromagnetic model, we establish the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction as an important mechanism in thin-film magnetism, determining the orientation of magnetic domains relative to the lattice, the type of domain wall, and the rotational direction of the magnetization in the wall. Applying the analysis to two monolayers Fe on W 110 , ...
